Round Trip of Mount Pelion
This route is a full day excursion where you will experience the diversity of Pelion, both in landscape and architecture alike. You should start early in the morning (not later than 10.00 am) and head east towards Milies. The reason is that you want to take full advantage of the sun’s direction and orientation, finishing of your route at the west side of Pelion to enjoy the sunset, while sipping coffee in Makrinitsa Square.
When you reach the Aegean side there are numerous beaches to choose from (Milopotamos, Damouchari Mama Mia beach) to name a few. We love Limionas beach, although keep in mind that there is a steep decent of dirt road just before reaching the beach.
After your lovely swim at any of the numerous beaches, head for ‘Kissos’ village and have a refreshment or a traditional sweet at the main square.
From here you drive up the road towards ‘Chania’, the highest village of Pelion. It is truly remarkable to experience the change from orchards and olive groves, to plane trees and then to chestnut, oak and birch trees once you are farther from the beach. And all that in a 20 minutes drive! Needless to say that the views towards the sea through the thick forest vegetation will remain unforgettable in your minds. When you cross the small ski centre of Pelion at Chania and start your decent towards Portaria, you will have great panorama views of the city of Volos and the southern Thessaly valley.
An unforgetable experience! This trip lets you see all of Pelion in one day! Joseph P. | USA
In ‘Portaria’ you can stop at ‘Myrro’ to buy organic herbal teas, hand made creams and cosmetics. A must place to visit. Ask Alkistis to help you find the best brew that suits you. In Portaria you can find the up market restaurant ‘Gefsokratoras’, if you had too much of taverna dinners. Make sure you call the for a reservation.
Or else head for Makrinitsa village and enjoy the sunset from the square, having a drink or a dinner. If you want a bit more of explotration, then head for Volos and take a nice stroll at the city’s pedestrian street by the sea for an ice cream, and then drive back to PELION HOMES via Agria.
Coming back home from this long but exciting day you will most definitely feel full and content.
